Schools of Southeast

Before the rural districts were merged into the Brewster Central School in 1946, the Town of Southeast educated its children the way most of rural New York did — in a string of numbered common school districts, each with a one-room schoolhouse within a child’s walking distance. The Village of Brewster, incorporated in 1894, kept its own village schools alongside them.

This catalog gathers those schools one by one, from deeds, period maps, newspapers, and the public record. Each is mapped at its location whether the building still stands or not — some survive as houses, some are gone, and one lies within the ground New York City took for its reservoir. Entries marked Researching are identified but not yet placed or documented.
